Background
Defined as bleeding between the pia mater and arachnoid of the brain.
Frequency
Estimated annual rate of 6-25 per 100,000 people.
Morbidity/Mortality
Overall mortality is approximately 45%
10-15% of patients die before reaching medical care.
Mortality is 10% in the first 5 days.
30-day mortality is almost 50%.
Rebleeding is the major cause of morbidity/mortality (15-20% risk in the first two weeks for anuerysmal SAH)
Race
Blacks have a higher risk than whites
Sex
Incidence is higher in woman then men
Age
Peak age is 55-60 years of age but ~20% occur between ages of 15 and 45 years.
