What are the odds of getting into a Neurosurgery residency after completing a Neurology Residency? I am an IMG with a poor Step 1 score, plan to ace the Step 2 CK (in december this year), get USCE, pass Step 2 CS and ace Step 3 (next year) in time for the 2012 match (for Neurology).
I would greatly appreciate advice in this regard.
Also, is it possible for one to be certified and work in both fields-Neurology and Neurosurgery?

People have done that in past. There a Neurosurgery resident at University of Minnesota who completed his neurology residency prior to matching in NS. He is also an IMG.

Dr. Kendall Lee, professor at the Mayo Clinic, did a neurology residency before his neurosurgery residency.  I do not believe he practices neurology, per se, however he does half basic science research and half neurosurgery in the OR, so his neurology residency may help him out there.  I’d say doing both would make one an excellent neurosurgeon who does not have to rely on his neurologist colleagues as much.  I don’t see any benefit in seeing non-surgical patients, in this case, because they can go to a neurologist who did not spend 7+ extra years of training to learn the surgical management of patients with neurological diseases.
