I realize there are similar threads, but some of them are old and many only have a couple posts, so I figured it was worth asking again with an updated list of available choices.

Greenberg 7th ed. (I already have 6th)
The ICU Book (Marino)
Youman’s (new edition comes out March 2011)
Citow board review
Moore board review
Alleyne board review questions
Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography - Osborn
Principles of Neurosurgery - Rengachary
Operative Neurosurgical Anatomy - Caputy/Fossett
Cranial Anatomy & Surgical Approaches - Rhoton
Neuroradiology: The Requisites - Grossman
Operative Neurosurgical Techniques - Schmidek/Sweet
Atlas of Neurosurgical Techniques: Spine & Peripheral Nerves - Sekhar/Fessler
Intensive Care in Neurosurgery - Andrews
Decision Making in Neurocritical Care - Frontera

Assuming an intern book fund of 500-1000, which are the essentials for a PGY1/2?  Anything not on this list?

Good books to read for fun:
The Knife Man (easy read, describes an early attempt at ‘coding’ a pt, repair of popliteal aneurysm, C-section - very interesting from a historical perspective)

When the Air Hits your Brain (probably the best narrative about neurosurgery ever - all the newer ones are too politically correct)
The Lobotomist (amazing story of a psychiatrist doing neurosurgical procedures and gaining widespread acclaim)
Michael Bliss’ book about Harvey Cushing (more about his personality than about neurosurgery)
Complications (Atul Gawande has 2 other books out now too, but I believe they are more of the same - the most recent is about checklists, he is a good writer but a little holier than thou - it is always his “‘friend’s” patient who tells him the story of their complication that gives him the anecdotes for his books)
Walking Out on the Boys (about the old-boy network in neurosurgery)

Books that tend to paint neurosurgery in a rosy hue (for easy layperson digestion)
Another Day on the Frontal Lobe
Judith’s Pavilion

And one other book that every neurosurgeon should own:  Examination of Peripheral Nerve Injuries by Russell.  The BEST peripheral nerve exam book out there.

We recently bought the following books to keep specifically in our resident work room for easy access. We tried to limit the collection to the highest yield books. I have put a star next to the ones I think are highest yield for internship, and 2 stars next to ones you may want to consider even as a med student. I have added the recommended retail price, though most are available cheaper used.

What’s the difference (besides length) between Principles of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery Explained?
