Subinternship: 1 at most conveniently located program
Letters: 2 neurosurgeons (1 chairman letter from away subI), 1 plastic surgeon, 1 OB-GYN, 1 family practice doc
Applied to 39 programs, 20 invites, 12 interviews, no second looks
Ranked only programs that I felt I could live/work in happily for 7 years (5 total), Matched (no sub-I here)
Interview realistically at programs that you can validate some relation to city/program/etc. and above all rank wisely
