I know very little about the neurosurgery program. I interviewed there for med school a couple of years ago so just thought I’d throw my two cents in from that experience.
I was super impressed by Richmond in general. A friend who did a fellowship there said it’s 2 hours from everything - ocean, mountains, DC, etc - which is great. Also some very cool cities are just a short day trip away from Richmond. Very steeped in history and quite cool because of it, in my opinion.
If you have kids or are looking at starting a family during residency, I hear the education system is quite good.
Also very impressed with the medical school and hospital. Seemed like it would be an excellent place to live and train and will be at or near the top of my list when applying to neurosurgery in a couple of years and I’ll likely try to arrange a Sub-I there. I think the department is academically strong, if that’s your cup of tea.
There’s a blog by a current VCU neurosurgery resident - may be a good way to get in contact with someone out there.
I know for the medical school there is an option to do third and fourth year at Inova Fairfax - which sounds to be an excellent facility.
Does anyone know if Fairfax is in the loop during the neurosurgery residency or if you stay in Richmond the whole time?
