Mayfield - 18 November 2008 05:04 PM Stem Cell - 18 November 2008 12:42 PM 1st year is general surgery, and now also some neurology, neuroradiology and neurosurgery.
I’m not sure this is the case anymore. I thought all neurosurgery programs starting in 2009 will not have the typical general surgery experience. Have people heard differently on the trail?
They told us at Brown specifically the number of weeks each of the different rotations during first year, but I failed to write this down. I think the specific rotations within general surgery included pediatrics, trauma, vascular and ICU, in addition to the more neuro-centric rotations. These were selected by the nsg faculty to optimize the intern experience and preparation for subsequent years… Clearly it is vastly different than prior years.

Thanks Stem Cell. That makes more sense. Great write-up on Brown.

D. muscipula - 18 November 2008 03:09 PM Thanks, Stem Cell for your thoughtful review of Brown. It was very complete! However, from now on maybe we should use the following page for reviewing specific programs: http://more.studentdoctor.net/residency.php
It has a more standardized format and can be as brief or detailed as you like which will encourage more people to use it. Because… there’s no way you have time to review all the programs you’ve visited as well as you did for Brown! (I, personally, hope you do as it will benefit us all, but let’s be more realistic!).
Of course, if Kenny wants to do one up for UH it might save us from having to mess with SDN....
Indeed I have cryptic notes regarding my impressions from interviewing at several other programs that I have yet to edit and upload, in part as I’m not sure the best venue. I chose to discuss Brown first, as it little else is said about it on UH, and I thought it a very fine program that has perhaps gotten a bad media rap. While I definitely see the utility of the SDN format, I think the happy monopoly UH has over the nsg applicant population would make a local forum preferable if possible. Perhaps a series of new “2008/9 interview impressions of _____” threads under the “programs” forum would be appropriate?

Good golly, if you guys keep this up, we’re going to have to hire someone with actual web development experience to make all these changes.
Right now, Stem Cell’s idea is great: we now have a new forum for this specific purpose. Try to keep the headings limited to specific programs, i.e., “UCSF,” “Brown,” etc.
Until then, I’ll try to work on a format similar to SDN’s. Thanks for all the input.
PS My last name is spelled “Liu.” Recommend you get this right before you interview in Portland. I might pimp you on it.

Word to Big Bird, Kenny L-i-u - I’ll get to contributing then, thanks.
If one has kept track of your favored pimping questions they might include:
Branches of the external carotid artery
Branches of the internal carotid artery
Most common metastatic tumors associated with hemorrhage
Why the program should choose the individual
What should you ask the individual
What are your three biggest weaknesses?
What are three qualities all residents should embody?
So why do you want to come here?
A joke.
Spelling your name correctly is too much. It’s too complicated. Seriously though, I know some dirty jokes. Perhaps a little clarification on that one might go a long way.

In the matter of size vs. function, a penis and a thyroid are similar organs. You may be hyperthyroid, hypothyroid or euthyroid and none of which can be decided by the size of the goiter. – JoK
Don’t steal from me though lol
