I got a flurry of invitations toward the end of September/beginning of October, but for the last week I’ve heard absolutely nothing either way. Is anyone else in the same boat? Any ideas what might be going on?
Yeah, I only got one last week myself. Must be the pre-MSPE trough....

Man, almost 2/3 of programs have sent out invitations. There are 6-7 programs on that list which I applied to but have not recieved invitations for.
To date, I have received 7 invitations.
Hope everyone is well.
latin, i’m in a similar situation. there are several on the list from which i have heard nothing. the last of my LoRs were uploaded just a couple of days ago, so i don’t know how that changes things.
ctsire mentioned BNI. what other programs traditionally request that applicants not discuss their invitation to interview?
Yeah, but consider the 1/3 that aren’t on the list: UCSF, USC, UCLA, Hopkins, MGH, BWH, Northwestern, Duke, BNI (maybe), Penn, Cornell, Emory, and so on. It used to be true that programs could see where else you applied, and could make assumptions about where else you’d get interviews, but with ERAS they can’t, so it’s harder to tell what’s going on. I do think that chairmen and PD’s talk, and that it affects both interview offers and eventual ranking, but that’s what happens in a small field like this.
I just keep reminding myself that the point is to end up training in neurosurgery, not to win the game of “who got more interviews.”

I guess that I’m not quite sure I understand the logic of a program not wanting to share when they offer interviews. I think this list very useful. Although I know it is frustrating for some, if there is a program that I’m really interested in and they have not sent an invite but they have made offers, I feel comfortable calling the program and just inquiring about my application. Now perhaps that is what the programs are trying to avoid, but I think you should be able to express additional interest in a program.
So, I guess if you haven’t heard from a place that has sent out invites, you can pretty much expect a rejection in the near future...which doesn’t look good considering the remaining programs are harder to get invites from. Awesome!
I really think some of them are waiting to see how many cancellations they get, once that last group sends out invites. But there probably won’t be as many cancellations this year, since the application season is more spread out. What’ll happen instead is, there will just be a sizable group of applicants who attended an insane number of interviews. But they can still only match at one place, so if programs aren’t accounting for that, they may end up with a vacancy.
In any event, there’s nothing to do but wait. Or call.
I don’t know if calling them will hurt or help our chances. I imagine if most applicants start calling programs, it would be pretty painful for them. I don’t know what the right answer is....any thoughts?
I think one solution for a program that you are very interested in (but did not rotate at) would be to call and see if you can do a one-two week visit/away rotation. I’m not sure how effective it would be to call and say that you are actually interested even though they know you already applied.
