Complaints are starting file in from some big name people and even I have to say that the bashing and flaming that goes on on this site is not as entertaining as it used to be. See poll on front page.
Why not just let a few registered users (or all?) have the ability to quickly and easily delete any thread or post that is way off topic (like 90% of the anonymous threads/posts are)? UH only gets a few dozen posts a day, so it’s not like it would take a lot of work to delete all of the ‘amen brothers’ and Full Metal Jacket quotes. But anonymous posting is ESSENTIAL to getting honest reports on individual institutions. No resident is going to bad mouth his or her program - no matter how malignant - if he or she is not anonymous.
Eliminating anonymous posts will kill the most valuable facet of this website. Just get a few mods who delete all absurd/racist/hateful posts. It will take 10 minutes a day, and if you have 5 mods, that’s only two minutes a day.

i agree the loss of anonymity would suck, but if that’s what it takes to get some meaningful conversation on here, I’m all for it. I dunno what’s responsible for the direction the site has taken, but solid information is nearly non-existent.
People can register under a pseudonym if they’re concerned about anonymity. At least then we’d be able to tell whether any questionable info is from a troll, or a more reliable source.
here’s a thought; wait a couple of weeks until you do anything. the trolls/idiots who post the worthless crap that we see everyday may well see this thread and stop. i agree that moderators would be a good idea, but someone’s worthless post might be another’s valuable insight. who is too judge? sure, most of it is obvious- but do we throw the baby out with the bathwater?
wait a couple of weeks and see what happens. the full metal jacket idiot and the amen brotha guy are probably one and the same. smart money says that this thread alone will stop a lot of the worthless posting.
To address the first commenter: It’s just a psychological ploy when you post under an anonymous login. Whether you are logged in as an anon user or a registered user, your IP is logged nonetheless. Posting under a name that just happens to be “anonymous” makes you feel a sense of security that no one could find you out. They can.
Yes, the mods can tell what IP a post is from. So it’s dumb to post lies about someone, even now. But the rest of us can’t, and the vast majority of posts lately are garbage. People don’t post that kind of crap quite as much when it’ll be tied to their screen name. And you can ban those who do, while still allowing people to create secondary accounts to post sensitive things they need to say anonymously. It’s a win all around.
Would it be much trouble for you to have a member forum in addition to some very limited amount of anonymous threads? I think both types of forums could be valuable on this site.

We already have that, and it’s not working. If there’s any area at all where people can post anonymously, everyone will post there. Who’s going to sign their name when they don’t have to?
Neither you nor me, obviously. And I don’t think either of us is fundamentally different from anyone else on this site.
