Hi. I am a third year medical student working on a “revisited” review article. The PI wanna submit it to a branch ( JNS: Spine, JNS: Pediatrics...etc) of Journal of Neurosurgery (JNS). I found that the impact factors for these branches are too low!! On the other hand, JNS is the AANS journal!

I’m interested in doing functional research on Parkinson’s; however I don’t have any clinical experience. I found a neurosurgeon at my institution who does Parkinson’s clinical research on the effectiveness of various clinical/surgical procedures, but my only knowledge of the brain is limited to the pathology and anatomy textbooks, with little to no knowledge of neurosurgery. I’m assuming the neurosurgeon doesn’t even have a lab since he’s busy directing a certain clinical center at the hospital. Should I just stick to basic science research? How does one (who isn’t yet a clinician) contribute to functional (or any other, e.g. oncology or trauma) neurosurgery research when most of which is analyzing diagnostic/surgical procedures? Thanks.

In terms of attaining great letter of recommendations, who you know is a major factor. However it is difficult to be acquainted with the bigger names in the field without knowing where to look. How can I search who are the more prominent surgeons in the field in a given city? Google doesn’t help very much with this.

Thanks.

Does anyone have any thoughts/advice on whether it’s possible to go into a private practice as an endovascular neurosurgeon? From the info I’ve gathered it seems that most (attendings) feel that you need to be at a big academic practice to have such a practice. I’d hate to have to give up a sub-specialty that I really enjoy to stay in an academic setting if I don’t want all the rest that comes with it.
